I was born in Oklahoma and raised all over the southern gulf before my family moved to Doha, Qatar, where I lived for four years and graduated from high school. While I missed out on the typical American high school experience, growing up in an international setting exposed me to a wide variety of people, places and ideas that have shaped who I am. I now live in Houston, and while I was once skeptical that such a sprawling city could be a suitable home, I’ve come to love it thanks in large part to its diverse community that keeps me in touch with my international roots. Most importantly it helps me to satisfy my passions - Houston is a great jumping off point for travel (I’m always planning a trip somewhere), has an underrated live music scene (I’m a music nerd and former college radio DJ), excellent restaurants (I’m an avid and enthusiastic eater), and has plenty of outdoor activities (I’m a golfer/runner/biker).
Who are your favorite writers?
George Orwell, Haruki Murakami, Cormac McCarthy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky are probably on my personal Mt. Rushmore of writers. Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov has been my favorite novel since I first read it in high school.
What are your travel must-haves?
A good set of headphones and the White Noise app on my phone have gotten me through many early morning flights.
Where is your favorite place on earth? Why?
Since I first visited when I was nine years old, New Orleans has been my favorite city in the world. I went to college there at Tulane and still visit as often as I can. It has always felt like home, which is a rare feeling for a kid who moved around a lot.
If you were a kind of herbivore, what kind of herbivore would you be and why?
Judging by the year when I tried to be a vegetarian, I would guess the kind that eats only carbs and cheese?
Your favorite virtue? Why?
Empathy, if that counts as a virtue. We would have a lot fewer problems if we were better at putting ourselves in other peoples’ shoes. This is especially true during consulting projects.
