Volunteering with the NHSPCA to combat animal cruelty

Comment

I’ve ridden horses most of my life. I own and compete a very plump and shiny thoroughbred horse. While his life is great, there are lots of horses that don’t have it so easy. Horse care is extremely expensive, especially in winter in New England when a horse cannot forage for his own food.

The NHSPCA is dedicated to helping horses whose owners are no longer able to care for them. Since May of 2009, I have been proud to donate a few hours a week of my time to do barn chores and work with these animals to help them recover from difficult situations and move on to productive, happy lives in new homes.

During my time at the NHSPCA I have seen some very sad cases of cruelty and neglect. But the things that keep me going back are the rewards of giving a horse a second chance, the joy of seeing the spark of life come back into a horse’s eyes, and the success stories of the horses we’ve placed in new homes. At the end of 2009 I was named the NHSPCA Barn Volunteer Rookie of the Year and at the end of 2010 I received the NHSPCA Golden Horseshoe Award. I look forward to continuing my work at the NHSPCA for years to come.
