Getting to know Jon Nelson

Merging with Kalypso, competitive running and adult beverages

Comment

I’m a sixth-generation Coloradoan living in Fort Collins with my wife and two kids.  During the fall you can usually find us at a college football game on Saturdays and at Mile High Stadium on Sundays.  Outside of watching sports, I spend quite a bit of time running.  I’m a pedestrian (at best) marathon runner who believes in minimal shoes and thinks staying up for 24 hours to run 200 miles with a six-person team is the definition of a good time.

What are you most excited for about the Integware and Kalypso merger?

To put it simply: learning. Learning about what Kalypso offers that we haven’t been able to in the past; learning how they’ve executed similar engagements differently; learning what new capabilities we can offer our existing clients. I’m excited to expand my horizons!

Secondly, I’m excited and thankful to join a firm that has such fantastic people.  Without exception, every person I’ve interacted with has treated me very well and made me feel welcome. Kalypsonians are just overflowing with talent.

How do your business views align with Kalypso’s culture and values?

I wouldn’t pretend to know everything about Kalypso’s culture and values, but from what I’ve learned so far, I absolutely love two things:

  • Being the “leaders behind the leaders” fits my personality as well as my style of consulting delivery.
  • I’m also very keen on working hard and playing hard. I’m not sure if that’s an officially recognized part of the culture but it certainly seems to be a theme I’ve felt. This is particularly fun and rewarding when you have a team of passionate, experienced and intelligent people focused on achieving amazing things for their clients.

What has been your favorite role throughout your career and why?

I’m most proud of the times I helped lead a team down a path that seemed impossible and helped them realize they are more capable than they ever thought they were.

How would your colleagues describe you?

I decided to source responses directly from them. The results:

  • "Tenacious"
  • "Rambles on about nothing"
  • "Enjoys adult beverages"
  • "Tries to do the right thing all the time - it gets him into trouble quite frequently"

What is your hidden talent?

You know, I asked my wife this question and her suggestions were a bit sarcastic and generally nothing I’d like to share!  I’m not sure that there is much hidden about me, I’m pretty open with everyone. I guess you’ll just have to get to know me better to figure that one out!

What is your most treasured possession?

Outside of my family and friends, everything else is just “stuff”.

What is your motto?

I’ve never thought about having a “motto” before. I believe we should always strive to do what’s right.  You’re going to fail, be uncomfortable, be unpopular and probably be ridiculed – but at the end of the day you can hold your head high. I’ve yet to achieve this to any degree I’m satisfied with (because I fail constantly), but every day is a new day – and every moment is a new opportunity to be better.
