Saluting innovation at The University of Engineering and Technology of Peru for teaming with the advertising agency Mayo Peru DraftFCB to create the first billboard that produces potable water out of thin air. Lima, Peru is located at the edge of the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on earth, leaving its people with limited access to clean water for drinking or bathing. This part of Peru only gets two inches of rainfall every year but has an extraordinarily high humidity of about 98 percent, which has inspired UTEC’s engineers to develop a billboard unlike anything seen before.
The billboard has a unique technology that traps humidity and transforms it into drinking water. After reverse-osmosis purification, the water flows into a 20-liter storage tank at the base of the billboard with a simple faucet that gives local residents access to the water. The billboard has already produced thousands of liters of drinking water which is equivalent to the water consumption of hundreds of families per month. We salute UTEC for putting "imagination into action" and proving that it is possible to solve problems with technology one sign at a time.
